Are you ready for the new term? Checklist for supply staff

Are you ready for the new term? Why not take a look through our handy checklist to be sure you have everything in hand before the new term starts?

1. Make sure you have everything up to date

Keep us up to date with your latest details – it will help us to find you work more quickly. If you don’t have an assignment already, then you’ll need to make sure there are no delays getting work at the start of a new term. The things you should check are up to date are:

CV – Make sure you have sent an up to date CV to your consultant. If you need help to improve/enhance your CV, you could check out our sample CV here.

Referees – One of the key things which prevents us from offering assignments to our contractors is out of date paperwork, and in particular – references! So, make sure that you have these completely up to date by putting a call into our compliance team and checking whether any more recent ones are needed.

DBS – Make sure that your DBS check is still valid and up to date – without one, you simply can’t work in a school

Availability – Does your consultant know which days of the week you are available? Axcis contractors can update their availability by using our simple online diary on the Axcis app or online – make sure yours has been filled in for the new term!

2. Be proactive

Many agency workers who have yet to accept an assignment for the coming term fall into the trap of assuming that they don’t need to do anything except sit and wait for the phone to ring with an offer of work. Although this is not strictly untrue, you might find that you secure work more quickly if you are proactive. Things you can do include:

Apply for jobs – at Axcis, all of our jobs are advertised on our website. By applying, your consultant will receive a notification, and you will proceed directly to the shortlisted candidates who are being considered for the role. So get onto our jobs page today and start to apply for positions which appeal to you.

Follow up with a call – once you’ve applied online for jobs, if there are any for which you feel you are particularly suitable, follow it up with a phone call. There could have been lots of applications for the position, and you’ll want to make sure you stand out. So give the consultant mentioned on the job advert a ring and talk to them about the role and why you feel you are suitable. They may give you advice to tweak your CV or do other things which will help you to secure it, so it’s well worth the time spent picking up the phone.

Encourage your consultant to market your details – agencies will sometimes contact suitable schools on your behalf to let them know you are available for work. If you’d be keen for this to happen, it may be worth talking to your consultant and making sure they know how far you’d travel and what sort of schools you are keen on so that they can approach them on your behalf to seek out upcoming vacancies.

3. Understand the types of SEND you’ll be supporting

When working with special educational needs and disabilities, it’s essential that you have a good idea of the types of SEND you’ll be supporting. If you have children with needs or conditions that you’ve not come across before, then it may be a good idea to undertake some training or do some research. Check out our CPD Training and Career Development page and the Axcis events diary to see if we are running any courses which are useful to you. We offer a wealth of free CPD training as well as an extensive SEND resources section on our blog to help you on your way.

4. Prep your lesson plans and support materials

If you have already secured a role for the coming term, it’s a good idea to have some lesson plans and materials in hand ready to kick-start the new term and get your class off to a good start. Even if you don’t have a full timetable yet, or are waiting to secure some supply work, you can still do some prep. It never hurts to have some basic activities ready so you don’t get caught out unprepared!

Refer a friend for some extra cash!

If you could do with some extra cash (and let’s face it – who couldn’t?) then it might be worth seeing if you have any friends, colleagues or family who would be suitable for special needs teaching or support work – so get your thinking cap on! Click here for more info.

*Terms apply – contact your consultant for details.

Ace Your SEND Education Job Interview

The 20-Word Introduction That Gets You the Job: How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in SEND Interviews

Why First Impressions Matter

Your interview begins long before you finish your first answer. The question “Tell me about yourself” is asked in almost every SEND interview, and many educators lose the interview panel’s attention within 30 seconds.

Why? Because they talk about themselves instead of what matters most: the pupils.

The Mistake Most Education Professionals Make

Interview panels often hear the same introduction again and again:

Qualifications and training dates

Years of experience in order

Job titles and school names

Generic statements like “I enjoy working with children”

The issue? Your CV already tells that story. What interviewers are really asking is: “Why should we choose you for our pupils?”

A Story: TA Sarah’s Turning Point

Sarah, a Teaching Assistant, once began her answer with training dates and school names. She noticed the panel switch off.

At her next interview, she tried a new approach:
“I help non-verbal pupils find their voice and join in with their classmates.”

Twelve words. The panel leaned forward. “That’s exactly what we need, tell me more.”

This time, she got the job.

The 20-Word Interview Rule

Your introduction should be:

Under 20 words

Focused on pupil outcomes

Specific enough to be memorable

Template: “I help [type of pupils] to [key outcome] and [key outcome].”

SEND Interview Examples That May Work Instead

❌ “I’ve worked with SEMH pupils in primary and secondary schools.”

✅ “I help pupils with anxiety and trauma to trust adults, manage emotions and succeed.”

❌ “I’m trained in Makaton and PECS.”

✅ “I give non-verbal pupils tools to communicate, make choices and build friendships.”

❌ “I support pupils with sensory processing difficulties.”

✅ “I help pupils with sensory needs feel regulated, focused and ready to learn.”

Why It Works

A concise, pupil-focused introduction sparks curiosity. It makes the panel picture their own pupils benefiting from your support and invites deeper questions about your approach.

Make Your First Interview Impression Count

Your introduction is more than a formality; it’s your chance to show how you’ll make a difference for children and young people with SEND. Master those first 20 words, and you’ll set yourself apart from the very start.

How to Prepare for Your First Day in a SEND Setting

Starting a new role in a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) setting is an exciting opportunity, but it’s completely normal to have a few first-day butterflies! Whether you're a seasoned educator stepping into a new environment or supporting children for the very first time, a bit of preparation goes a long way.

Here’s how to set yourself up for success on day one:

1. Confirm the Details

Save your Axcis consultant’s contact details in your phone and keep a hard copy as well in case you misplace your phone and need to contact them for support on the day.

Check the Axcis App beforehand for booking details, including the school’s name, contact person, address, and map link.

Don’t have the Axcis App yet? Download it now on Google Play or the Apple Store.

Plan your journey in advance: Check bus/train timetables or parking options and give yourself extra time for delays.

Understand school-specific policies: Every school is different, so make a note to gather all relevant information from the contact person on arrival.

        Examples include:

        · The school’s Safeguarding and Behavioural Policies
· EHCP plans for each student that you’ll be supporting
· Ask if there is any information you need to know about the setting or students.

Dress code: All Axcis candidates complete our safeguarding training, which includes key guidance on the appropriate dress code. When in doubt, opt for smart-casual and always avoid jeans, open-toed or high-heeled shoes, or shorts (unless you’re in a PE or outdoor role).

2. Pack the Essentials

Here’s a quick checklist of what to bring:

Notepad, pens, and any stationery you may need for the day

Your photo ID and your DBS certificate

A packed lunch, snacks, and a refillable water bottle

3. Observe, Listen, and Adapt

No two SEND settings are alike. Take time to:

Observe how staff interact with students

Learn the school’s routines and expectations

Identify communication strategies in use (e.g. visuals, Makaton, BSL)

🙋 Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Showing a willingness to learn is always appreciated.

4. Stay Calm and Be Flexible

Working in SEND often means embracing the unexpected. Students may need extra time, or activities may shift midday. Your ability to remain calm, patient, and adaptable is key.

5. Reflect and Check In

At the end of the day, take a moment to reflect:

What went well?

What did you learn?

Is there anything you’d like more support with?

Your Axcis consultant is always happy to hear how it went and guide you if needed.

Bonus Tip: Keep Growing

Spooky Sensory Fun for SEND Classrooms this Halloween!

Halloween can be a fun and engaging time for students, but it’s important to consider how different activities might affect students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). At Axcis, we understand the importance of making these celebrations inclusive and supportive. Here are some sensory-friendly ideas to help make Halloween fun for everyone!

1. Spooky Sensory Bins

Create themed sensory bins using safe and tactile items like dried pasta "brains," rubber spiders, or kinetic sand. These bins allow students to explore textures in a controlled, low-stress environment.

2. Calming Halloween Corners

Set up a “calming corner” with Halloween-themed stress balls, fidget toys, and noise-cancelling headphones. It gives students a safe space to step away if the excitement becomes overwhelming.

3. Pumpkin Decorating (Without the Carving!)

Instead of traditional pumpkin carving, let students decorate pumpkins with paint, stickers, or soft materials. This reduces mess and allows for more sensory-friendly creativity.

4. Sensory-Friendly Costumes

For schools allowing costumes, suggest sensory-friendly options like soft fabric costumes without scratchy tags or props. This makes dressing up more comfortable for students who may be sensitive to textures.

5. Halloween Stories with Visuals

Use Halloween-themed stories with plenty of visuals and interactive elements. Adapt the story for different learning styles by incorporating sound effects or using visual aids like puppets or illustrations.

6. Glow Stick Dance Party!

Organize a low-light, glow stick dance party. The soft lighting and colourful glow sticks can create a visually stimulating yet calming environment. Plus, it’s a great way to burn off some energy!

Keeping it Safe and Fun!

While Halloween is a time for fun and excitement, it's essential to ensure the safety and comfort of all students, especially those with SEND. Always be mindful of sensory triggers and individual needs, and create a safe space for students who may feel overwhelmed. With a little extra planning, you can make this spooky season enjoyable and inclusive for everyone.

At Axcis, we’re committed to supporting SEND educators with fun, practical resources like these. Keep an eye on our social media channels for more seasonal ideas and tips to help you in the classroom!

The Importance of Mental Health Support in SEND Education

In the provision of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) education, the focus often lies on academic support and physical accommodations. However, an equally critical aspect that deserves attention is mental health support. Ensuring the mental well-being of both students and staff in SEND settings is paramount for fostering a nurturing and effective learning environment.

Understanding the Mental Health Needs of SEND Students

Students with SEND often face unique challenges that can impact their mental health. These may include social isolation, anxiety, and difficulties with communication. Recognising these challenges is the first step in providing appropriate support. Schools and educators should be equipped with the knowledge and resources to identify signs of mental distress to be able to intervene effectively.

Strategies for Supporting Student Mental Health

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment: Establishing a classroom atmosphere where students feel safe, respected, and included can significantly reduce anxiety and stress. This includes promoting positive interactions and celebrating diversity.

Implementing Individualised Support Plans: Tailoring mental health support to the individual needs of each student is crucial. This might involve working with mental health professionals to develop personalised strategies and interventions.

Encouraging Open Communication: Providing students with opportunities to express their feelings and concerns can help them feel heard and understood. Regular check-ins and the use of communication aids can facilitate this process.

Incorporating Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teaching students mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques can help them manage stress and improve their emotional regulation.

Utilising Team Teach and Positive Behaviour Management: For students exhibiting challenging behaviour, employing strategies like Team Teach and positive behaviour management can be highly effective. These approaches focus on de-escalation techniques and creating a supportive environment that encourages positive behaviour.

Supporting the Mental Health of SEND Educators

The well-being of educators is just as important as that of students. Teaching in SEND settings can be demanding, and educators may experience burnout or compassion fatigue. Here are some strategies to support their mental health:

Professional Development: The Axcis Academy offers registered Axcis Candidates a range of courses and webinars through the National College for free to aid with their tools and techniques for stress management, self-care, and mental health awareness to empower educators to take care of their own well-being. Additionally, training in Team Teach and positive behaviour management can equip staff with the skills needed to handle challenging situations effectively.

The Axcis Academy also offers a plethora of courses and webinars to help you in your roles as educators.

Mental Health Resources: A lot of schools usually offer, great, supportive cultures. Remember to get in touch with your consultant if you are unsure about something or need some advice reading whatever you are experiencing in your ad-hoc role as an Axcis candidate that could potentially be affecting your mental health or well-being. If you are a permanent member of staff at a school seek support from your team leaders. There are also charities like Education Support which specialise in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff in schools, colleges and universities. Call their freephone number to see if they can assist you in any way - 08000 562 561

Work-Life Balance: Work-life balance is important for any job. You can only help others when you are in a good state of mental health and wellbeing so take some time to take care of yourself. Set realistic expectations for yourself, and participate in practices that help you from burning out, whether that's nature, running, mindfulness, motivational content, reading etc. By empowering your mental health and well-being you're able to empower and inspire others, creating happier students and communities overall.

Mental health support is a vital component of SEND education. By prioritising the mental well-being of both students and educators, we can create a more supportive and effective learning environment. Schools must take proactive steps to integrate mental health strategies into their daily practices, ensuring that everyone in the SEND community can thrive. For students exhibiting challenging behaviour, employing strategies like Team Teach and positive behaviour management can make a significant difference, fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere for all.

Let's work together to make the differences that impact and empower.

Don't forget to update your availability using the Axcis App or get in touch with your consultant if you're looking for another booking. Most of all, don't forget to check out the Axcis Academy and enrol for your next CPD to boost your career prospects.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

Mental health is your emotional, psychological and mental well-being. It affects how you think, feel and behave.

That's why we’re once again proud to support the Mental Health Foundation this Mental Health Awareness Week – 13 to 19 May. Join in and help to create a world with good mental health for all.

This year’s theme is movement: moving more for our mental health. Get involved by finding and sharing your moments for movement this Mental Health Awareness Week.

#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MomentsForMovement

For many people, it can be hard to talk about their mental health problems. This can make them feel isolated and alone.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent,

but the one most responsive to change.” - Charles Darwin

Mental health is a subject that is often discussed in the media but rarely within the education sector. This is not surprising as there are many barriers to effective mental health support in schools. These include:

The stigma around mental health issues;

The fact that teachers and teaching assistants often feel responsible for their own and others' wellbeing;

Lack of time for reflection and development;

Lack of funding for training and support;

The lack of knowledge about mental health issues within the sector;

A reluctance to seek help due to fear of stigmatisation or discrimination;

As teachers and teaching assistants, we are constantly adapting to change. Working in education can be very stressful. The classroom environment is ever-changing and we must learn to cope with this. You have to deal with a wide range of issues from discipline to behaviour management and from different learning styles to helping students with special educational needs. Sometimes it can be difficult for us to deal with these changes and so it is important that you're able to manage your mental health in order to help the children in your classroom.

Here are some tips on how you can do this:

Take breaks when needed

Eat healthy snacks and meals and drink plenty of water

Get enough sleep (at least 7 hours)

Exercise regularly

Take time out from your busy schedule and have a break from it all every now and again. This may mean going somewhere where you can relax away from your normal routine. You might like to go for a walk in nature or visit a local café or park. It could also mean doing something completely different like going on holiday or spending time with family and friends.

Exercise can also help improve your mental health by boosting serotonin levels in your brain which helps improve sleep patterns and feelings of depression and anxiety. Taking part in physical activity such as walking, swimming or cycling helps reduce stress levels which may cause symptoms such as headaches, back pain or muscle tension.

If you find yourself feeling down or anxious about work or life in general, talk to someone about it. It can make all the difference to how you feel and it can help you feel better, faster.

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 13th to 19th May 2024. Click here to find out how you can get involved or find support for your own mental health.

Mental Health CPD Training

If you want to find out more about supporting students’ mental health then Axics offer a free CPD accredited course for all our registered candidates: Student Mental Well-Being - Training for Teachers & Staff 2023/24. The course provides you with information regarding good practice on how schools should address the situation of pupils with mental health issues. To enrol please just email our Candidate Training team.

Are you looking for SEND staff or work?

If you're looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists?
What is a Cover Supervisor?

What is a Cover Supervisor?

Cover Supervisors are suitably trained or experienced school staff who supervise pupils carrying out pre-prepared exercises when teaching staff are on short-term absence. The Cover Supervisor’s main job is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set.

What's involved?

Cover Supervisor roles vary significantly depending on whether the role is undertaken in a primary, secondary or special school. The role however should not require any active teaching, marking or planning.

Main duties may include:

Supervising work that has been set in accordance with the school policy.

Managing the behaviour of pupils while they are undertaking this work to ensure a constructive learning environment.

Responding to any questions from pupils about processes and procedures.

Dealing with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school’s policies and procedures.

Collecting any completed work after the lesson and returning it to the appropriate teacher.

Reporting back as appropriate using the school’s agreed referral procedures on the behaviour of pupils during the class, and any issues arising.

Coordinating and supporting teaching assistants / support staff in the classroom.

What skills, experience and qualifications do you need?

There are no specific qualifications required to become a Cover Supervisor - it is up to schools and local authorities to decide what qualifications and experience you will need to have. Some may employ Cover Supervisors based solely on their experience, others may require some form of minimum qualification.

As a minimum however, most schools require the following:

Previous, significant experience of working in an education environment

Excellent communication skills

Good behaviour management skills

A high degree of flexibility

Possible qualifications that schools may also look for include:

GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths at grade C or above

A recognised, relevant level 3 or level 4 qualification for supporting teaching and learning in schools

A degree

What training is available?

Axcis offers a Cover Supervisor course which is designed to ensure you have all the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in a Cover Supervisor role. More information can be found on our CPD Training and Career Development Page.

What’s next?

If you are interested in becoming a Cover Supervisor, speak to your consultant or local Axcis office to discuss your options further. Or if you are already a Cover Supervisor, check out our jobs pages to start applying for your next perfect role.

National Epilepsy Week 2023

From 24th May to 30th May, National Epilepsy Week will be taking place to raise awareness for those affected by epilepsy, what epilepsy is, who’s affected and what can be done to help those who suffer from this condition.

What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and causes recurring seizures or fits in people. Due to an uncontrolled increase of excess electrical activity in the brain interfering with the normal functions, this causes a short interruption to the relay of messages in the brain.

Who’s affected?

Approximately 500,000 people in the England are diagnosed with epilepsy, affecting people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.

What can be done to help?

Learning to recognise the symptoms of a seizure is a great place to start helping those affected, as well as knowing what to do when a seizure occurs to minimise the harm done to both the person and those around them. You can also look into lobbying for more support for those affected by epilepsy, so they can get the treatment and care they deserve.

All in all, epilepsy is a condition affecting more people than you might think, and by knowing the early warning signs and what to do when a seizure occurs can make a big difference helping those affected by the chronic condition.

This years’ theme

This year the theme for the week is #epilepsymatters. Visit the Epilepsy Society website to find out more on National Epilepsy Week and much more.

Epilepsy Training

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental health is your emotional, psychological and mental well-being. It affects how you think, feel and behave.

The stigma around mental health issues;

The fact that teachers and teaching assistants often feel responsible for their own and others' wellbeing;

Lack of time for reflection and development;

Lack of funding for training and support;

The lack of knowledge about mental health issues within the sector;

A reluctance to seek help due to fear of stigmatisation or discrimination;

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 15th to 21st May 2023. Click here to find out how you can get involved or find support for your own mental health. Further information can also be found on the NHS website.

Mental Health CPD Training

CPD Training - Supporting Autistic Learners in the Secondary Classroom

Working with secondary aged students on the autism spectrum can be incredibly rewarding for both educators and students. Not only does it provide an opportunity to improve communication, social skills and academic performance, but it also helps create an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted and respected.

For teachers and support staff, further autism training is essential in order to effectively support these learners. With additional education comes a greater understanding of how best to meet the needs of students on the autstic spectrum. This might include techniques such as visual supports, verbal prompts or positive reinforcement strategies that help promote engagement and success in the classroom. In addition to this, extra training can equip staff with the tools they need to better recognise signs of stress or anxiety in their pupils – allowing them to intervene quickly and appropriately. It can also provide a deeper insight into the unique challenges faced by those on the autism spectrum, enabling everyone to create an environment that is more conducive to learning.

This is why we’re delighted to be able to offer a completely free “Supporting Autistic Learners in the Secondary Classroom” course, in conjunction with our training partners, Reachout ASC.
Refer a friend to Axcis and earn £50 in shopping vouchers

Refer your friends to Axcis, and not only will you be helping them to find work, but you will also earn £50 in shopping vouchers* – everyone’s a winner!

How does it work?

If you have friends who are looking for employment, why not refer them to Axcis? If we place them in a school or alternative provision for at least 5 days, you will receive £50 in shopping vouchers as a thank-you. (Please note that any referrals made who do not complete 5 days work will not be counted).

As an added bonus, the person you refer will also receive a £20 voucher when you get your shopping vouchers – double win!

How do I refer a friend to Axcis?

Simply CLICK HERE to send us their details and we will get in contact with them. If you can provide more information, like what sort of work they might be interested in, that will help us, but isn’t essential.

How will I know when my friend has worked 5 days?

All you need to do is ask your friend to let you know once they have completed their first 5 days with Axcis. If you then contact your consultant/local office you’ll be able to check if the 5 days have been completed. If they have, we will email you with your shopping vouchers.

*Terms and conditions apply as follows:

Referral bonus is not payable if the referred candidate has already registered with Axcis Education Recruitment prior to the referral being made.
The referred candidate must have been paid for 5 full days of work through Axcis in order for the referee to qualify for the payment.
We must have written evidence of the referral specifically mentioning names – either through our online referral form, by email/text message from the referee or the referred candidate, or by the candidate completing the applicable field online when they register with us.
Offer not open to permanent employees of Axcis Education Recruitment.

Top Safeguarding Tips for Supply Staff

Safeguarding is always a hot topic for education professionals. But how can you make sure that you are meeting your responsibilities with regard to safeguarding while working at schools on a supply basis?

1 – Pay close attention during your registration interview

Your consultant will run through the company safeguarding policy and also give practical advice for when you are in school. All Axcis staff are then safer recruitment tested at interview and offered further training where needed.

2 – Undertake further training

At Axcis, we take our training responsibilities seriously and are pleased to offer Safeguarding in Education Level 2 as part of our free training courses on offer. If you’d like to enrol on this course, please just speak to your Axcis consultant or alternatively you can email our Candidate Training team.

3 – Read the government guidance on safeguarding

The DfE issue guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). If you’ve already completed your registration with Axcis then you will already have received and read this. But all school staff should be familiar with this document so if you’ve not read it before, you should take a look.

4 – Be aware of the school child protection policy and staff behaviour policy

When you are new to a school, they should provide you with a copy of (or access to) the child protection policy and the staff behaviour policy. You should take the time to review these documents at your earliest convenience, as they may vary from school to school. However, we would always advise new members of staff to behave with caution and defer to experienced staff members if there are difficult situations, especially when you are new to a school.

5 – Be aware of who the designated safeguarding lead is

If you are not informed as to who the designated safeguarding lead in a school is, you should always ask. This is the person who you should approach if you have any cause for concern or questions regarding safeguarding or child protection while in school, so it’s important you know who they are.

6 – Reflect

Part of the “Safeguarding Trilogy” is to “reflect”. This is because simply the act of receiving a disclosure or being involved in an incident can be traumatic for all parties. The ‘reflect’ section includes both personal and professional issues: thinking about how you might deal with the situation in future or improve your practice to avoid incidents, and also making sure that you’re OK by talking to friends and family, and even your Axcis consultant if you’re feeling vulnerable.

7 – Be aware of early warning signs

All staff, whether on supply or not need to be aware that they are on the front line where safeguarding is concerned, and they are responsible for reporting signs of abuse or neglect to the designated safeguarding lead – there are some excellent support documents and advice provided by the NSPCC.

8 – Remember to inform your Axcis consultant

As an Axcis candidate, it is advised that you keep your consultant in the loop if you experience any safeguarding concerns while on supply at one of the schools we work with. At Axcis, we want to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of support and training to ensure that your experience of working for us is a positive one. Remember, if you have questions or concerns, your consultant is always just a phone call away.

Are you seeking SEND work or staff?

If you’re looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help!

Top tips to becoming a great SEND Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistants are an essential part of any SEND school. They play a vital role in supporting the class teacher in delivering lessons, and they help to ensure that each child's needs are met. Teaching Assistants provide opportunities for pupils to progress, whilst making sure that their individual goals and aspirations are met.

Know your role

The first step to becoming a great SEND Teaching Assistant is knowing your role. Knowing what you can do and what is beyond your role will help you to better serve your students.

It's important to know the limits of your role, as well as school policies and procedures surrounding those limits. It's also helpful if you have direct contact with parents or guardians so they can understand how best they can support their children at home.

Keep up to date with available training opportunities

Keeping up to date with training opportunities is crucial if you want to be a great SEND Teaching Assistant. Axcis offer a whole host of training opportunities for free.

Communication is key

Communication is key

Speak to your class teacher

Talk to the parents

Let pupils know what you are doing

Develop a relationship of trust and respect with the class teacher, pupils and parents

Develop a relationship of trust and respect with the class teacher. It's important to get this right from the outset, as it can be a key factor in building your reputation within the school and with parents. Be respectful towards pupils and parents. In order for both parties to feel comfortable around you, it is vital that you are open about your role, expectations and behaviour in relation to them. Be honest, transparent and trustworthy: If something goes wrong or if there are problems then don't hide anything from anyone; talk openly about what has happened so that everyone involved understands how they can help rectify any issues.

Always be positive

Be a role model and smile genuinely all the time — even when you're feeling tired or fed up — and show that it can be done by being happy yourself!

Conclusion

Taking on the role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) in a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) setting can, at times, be challenging. But as a TA in a SEND school you will make a huge difference to the children whose lives you touch.

You will have to be flexible and adaptable; learning new skills, ways of working and interacting with others is essential for your success as an effective TA. It’s important that you keep in mind that each child has their own individual needs which need to be addressed through your intervention plan. Don't expect all pupils with SEND to respond in the same way or at the same pace - what works for one may not work for another!

Are you ready to take on the challenge?

If you're looking for a SEND teaching assistant or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help?

Musical instruments to make with your class

With World Music Day around the corner, what better project to do with your children than create some instruments with them? Even better if you can bring a discussion about reusing or recycling into it, too! Here are our top ideas.

1. Easter Egg Maracas

The intention with this project is not to go out and buy a load of plastic eggs – the idea is to use what you have, so if (like me) you can’t stand to throw away the little pods that come in Kinder Eggs and you happen to have a drawer full of them at home, why not bring them in and let your class create some fun shakers or maracas with them? If the school canteen uses plastic spoons, collect and wash some and use these to create handles. With the addition of a few beans or a small handful of rice, you have the start of your DIY orchestra!

2. Tin Can/Crisp Tube Drums

Back to that “junk modelling” box to see what else I couldn’t stand to see go to landfill… and what do I find but some old crisp tubes and tin cans. Simply re-use the plastic lid, or stretch a balloon over the top and you have some instant drums.

3. Lolly Stick Harmonica

When browsing for ideas online, I came across this lovely idea to make simple harmonicas using some wax paper and lolly sticks. Most craft cupboards have these basic items, so why not give them a try?

4. Straw Pipes

By simply cutting straws to different lengths and taping them together, you can create this simple version of pan pipes. As this instrument is a bit less noisy than many, parents are sure to appreciate this one!

5. Gong!

If you have a couple of old foil catering trays, you can create this fun instrument by simply taping them together and using a cardboard tube to strike them – GONG! Kids love this one!

6. Castanets

Another chance to look through that junk modelling box for inspiration. If you have some bottle caps or something else that will suffice, you can have a go at making these simple castanets.

7. Mini Banjo

With some elastic bands, a lolly stick and a lid from an old jar, you can make these fun little mini banjos. Adjust the tension of the bands to create different notes and away you play!

8. Ankle/Wrist Bells

Take (or make) a bracelet and attach some bells to create some music while you move. Alternatively, attach them to paper plates for a home-made tambourine.

Do you like to craft with kids?

If you like the idea of crafting with kids, why not consider a classroom based role as a teaching assistant? At Axcis, we are always on the lookout for people with a passion for inspiring the next generation, so why not register on our website and see what jobs we can find for you?

5 Gift Ideas for Father's Day

Run out of ideas for Father's Day gifts? These 5 simple, home made gift ideas are sure to make an impression on dad. Perfect for making in the classroom with students or at home.

1. Calendar Blocks

For a simple but effective gift idea, consider making calendar blocks. If you don’t have scrap wood off-cuts, why not raid the kids toy box? Most of us have a set of wooden blocks in there somewhere! To make this awesome gift, you will need:

2 Cubes of wood

One long/oblong block of wood (that the two cubes will fit on top of)

Velcro strips, magnetic tape or flat Lego blocks

Decorating materials – paper/card/paint etc.

To make this lovely gift, start by decorating your blocks (or leave them rustic for a more natural feel). Then add numbers/fixings to each block as follows:

Block 1 (cube) – put numbers on each face of the cube – 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Block 2 (cube) – put these numbers of each face of the cube – 0, 1, 2, 6, 7, 8

Block 3 (oblong) – fix your Velcro/flat Lego block to one face – your months will attach to this.

Using good quality card, or laminated paper, create 12 strips of the appropriate size and put each month of the year on them. On the reverse of these strips, put the “matching” Velcro/Lego so that they will fix to your oblong block. Voila! You have a set of calendar blocks which can be used year after year. You can add another set of blocks for days of the week if you wish, or you can leave this part off – it’s up to you!

2. Make a Mug

You can pick up a plain white mug from most supermarkets for about a pound, and you can get ceramic pens/paints from most good craft stores, or online. Along with a bit of inspiration, that’s all you’ll need to create a lovely personalised mug for your dad this Father’s Day. You’ll need to bake your mug at 170C for about 40 mins to fix the design and prevent it from washing off. Who doesn’t love a new mug? Ideal for use at home or work, your Dad is sure to appreciate this lovely personal gift.

3. Lolly Pop Plant Pot

If you have a nice decorative plant pot, this is an ideal starting point. Alternatively you could use a plain white ceramic pot and decorate it in much the same way you can decorate a mug, then use it for this project.

Into the pot, place some florists oasis foam, or cut up some old polystyrene packaging to fit inside. Add to this a range of colourful lolly pops, and perhaps a cute home-made sign and voila! You have a lovely personal gift for dad!

4. Tin Can Desk Tidy

Cheap tins of tomatoes (without the pull tops) work well for this, because the old-school way of opening tins tends to leave you with a nice smooth top (no cut fingers from jagged tins, please!) and the acid from the tomatoes leaves the inside of the tin stain-free and easy to rinse out and use. Although any tin works, this is what I’ve personally found to be best for this type of project. Simple spray the can with undercoat to give a nice finish to work on, then decorate away for a personalised pen pot. You could even order some personalised pens/pencils to go inside as an added touch.

5. Dad Rocks! Paperweight

Next time you’re in the garden, keep an eye out for a nice big, round stone to use for this project. Again, spraying with undercoat first will give you a smoother surface to start working with. From there, you can decorate your paperweight using paint, sequins – anything really! Ideal for use as a paperweight but this could also be used to make a BBQ napkin weight or door stop – ideal for breezy summer days!

Any More Ideas?

Do you have any simple Father’s Day craft ideas to add to our list? Or perhaps you’ve made one of these and would like to share your efforts – either way, we’d love to hear from you!

Are you seeking SEND staff or Work?

If you’re looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help?

End of term checklist for Axcis contractors

Axcis candidates – don’t forget to go through our end of term checklist to ensure that your work placement ends smoothly. And thank you for all your hard work!

1 – Return keys/door cards and any other school property

Never walk away from your assignment with a set of keys as this can cause a huge cost to the school if they have to replace their locks as a result. Text books, laptops and any other material you have been lent needs to be given back promptly as failure to do so could impede the transition for the new member of staff as well as the students concerned, as well as being a nuisance to the school (who you will want to provide you with a good reference!)

2 – Don’t forget to make a final timesheet check before you finish!

The last job you should do before you complete a contract with a school is to double-check that your timesheets are all in and up to date. You can do this via your consultant, or by checking your online timesheet portal. It’s easier to sort out missing timesheets now than it is to chase them in a few weeks time when you realise you’re missing some pay!

3 – Update your CV and availability with Axcis

Don’t forget to also let your consultant at Axcis know what your availability for your next assignment is, and send in an updated CV. That way, when the new term starts, there won’t be any delays finding your next job with Axcis!

4 – Mark and hand all work back

Check, then double check that you have marked (where appropriate) and handed all work back to your line manager at school. It can be extremely stressful for the school or for the children concerned if you fail to return their work to them before you leave at the end of your contract. So even if you’re sure you have returned everything, have a good check through your desk/home/car just to be on the safe side.

5 – Ensure any handover paperwork is completed

It’s of paramount importance that you do a thorough handover of your work with the member of staff taking over your role. If this is not possible, talk to the HOD/HOY and give them your notes. This will ease the transition for the students from one member of staff to another. Your notes might include where they are in the syllabus but it may also involve comments about behaviours, triggers, medications etc.

Refer a friend and earn £££

Don't forget that Axcis runs a generous referral scheme, so if you know any friends or family members who are looking for SEND teaching or support work, find out more about the scheme here.

Your first day of work with Axcis – a useful checklist for success

So, you’ve secured your first day of work with Axcis. Here is a checklist to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible. Follow this guide and you can’t go wrong!

Be prepared – things to do before you go in

It’s important to be prepared for your first day of work, as you may not get a second chance to make a good first impression. In order to be as prepared as possible, you should:

Plan your journey – if relying on technology to get you to school, ensure you have a printed map and/or directions as well – just in case!

Read up about the school – unless it’s a very short notice booking, you should have time to check the school website/Ofsted reports and become familiar with the environment and students before you arrive for your first day.

Prepare some materials – hopefully the school will be organised and will already have learning materials ready for you to use. But don’t rely on this – if you have some wide-ranging activities or worksheets you can prepare in advance, do so – even if you don’t use them, being prepared will make you look good to the school.

Timesheet check – it’s worth calling your consultant at Axcis and asking them if you’ll need to do a paper timesheet or if the school you are working in does them online. If they are online, you shouldn’t need to do anything. However, if the school prefer good old paper timesheets, you’ll need to ensure you have one printed and ready to take in with you.

Dress appropriately – make sure you have an outfit ready which is suitable for the school you will be working in. If in doubt, check the dress code with your consultant.

Ensure you are signed up with a payroll company – the last thing we want is a delay in your payment

Ensure you have your DBS certificate and photo ID ready to take with you – schools will most likely want to see this on your first day of work

Once you are at school – things to remember on the day

Once you arrive for your first day, here are a few things you should remember to do:

Be on time (or early) – no manager will be impressed if you are late on your first day of work, no matter how great your excuse is.

Smile and be polite to all staff you meet – as my mum always said – manners are free!

Read up on the needs of the students – you won’t always be able to do this first thing in the morning as you may be needed in class. However, if you get chance, seek out the SENCo and see if you can read the EHC plans for the students you are working with. This will help you to meet their needs as well as demonstrating to the school that you are a conscientious employee.

Mark/assess – if you are teaching, you’ll be expected to assess any work you have done with the students that day. Even if you are only booked for a single day of work. If you’re not familiar with the marking policy of the school, simple corrections and a short comment is appropriate.

Tidy up – at the end of the day, ensure that the classroom you have been working in is clean and tidy.

Feedback – if you enjoyed the school and are keen to continue working there, seek out the line manager and tell them you had a great day and see if they need you back (if you’re not already booked). It’s fine to accept a booking and then let your consultant know. However, if you do NOT wish to return to the school, call your Axcis consultant for a discussion about this rather than telling the school directly before you leave for the day.

Timesheet – the final thing you should do before leaving school is your timesheet. If the school do paper timesheets, you’ll need to seek out the member of staff responsible for signing them and ensure it’s completed – AND YOU RETAIN A COPY – this can be as simple as a photo on your phone of the signed timesheet. If the school do them online you won’t need to do anything other than check your email to see that your copy has come through (and let Axcis know if it doesn’t!)

We hope you find this checklist useful and have a smooth first day working for us! And don't forget that we offer up to £250 in shopping vouchers if you refer any friends or family to us - find out more about the scheme here.

Supply staff: Get work quickly when the new term starts

How can you make sure you are at the top of the pile when it comes to making sure you get work quickly at the start of a new term? Here are our top tips.

Make sure you have everything up to date

Keep us up to date with your latest details – it will help us to find you work more quickly.
To make sure there are no delays getting work at the start of a new term, the things you should check are up to date are:

CV – Make sure you have sent an up to date CV to your consultant. If you need help to improve/enhance your CV, you could check out our article on writing a good CV.

Referees – One of the key things which prevents us from offering assignments to our contractors is out of date paperwork, and in particular – references! So, make sure that you have these completely up to date by putting a call into your consultant and checking whether any more recent ones are needed.

DBS – Make sure that your DBS check is still valid and up to date – without one, you simply can’t work in a school

Availability – Does your consultant know which days of the week you are available? Axcis contractors can update their availability by using our simple online diary– make sure yours has been filled in for the new term!

Be proactive

Many agency workers fall into the trap of assuming that they don’t need to do anything except sit and wait for the phone to ring with an offer of work.

Why isn’t there much day to day cover at the start of term?

The first few weeks of term can be an unpredictable time in the supply industry – typically, there will not be any pre-arranged absence or training happening in schools at the start of term, so the majority of vacancies will be for last-minute full-time, long-term assignments. Then, later in the term schools experience an increase in sick leave, paternity/maternity cover and cover for staff on training. As a result, short-term

Refer a friend and earn £££

Holidays and the start of term can be a difficult time for many supply workers. It's therefore a great time to think about referring friends to Axcis - if we find them work you can earn up to £250 in shopping vouchers. Find out more here.

Top tips for staff who are new to working in SEND schools

If you are thinking about working in a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school, or have recently accepted your first post in one and want some tips to help you get started, then look no further.

1 – Make sure you understand the needs of the children

Before you undertake a role in a special school, you should ensure that you understand the needs of the students you will be working with. In some ways, this is no different to working in a mainstream school, as you should always seek out this information in order to pitch your lessons or support activities appropriately. However, in a SEND school this information may be more detailed, and there may be higher risks associated with not taking the time to seek it out and use it in your planning. For example, you may have children who have specific “triggers” you need to be aware of. I once spoke with a teacher who used a whistle in his PE lessons and had not understood that one of his students reacted very badly to high pitched noises… needless to say that this didn’t end well! By speaking to the SENCO and the existing teachers/support staff, you can make sure that you identify the specific needs of the students you work with and cater for them appropriately.

2 – Undertake appropriate training

I’m not suggesting that you go back to university and re-train as a SEND practitioner. However, if you are going to work in a specialist autism provision (for example), then it’s important that you understand the condition. This could be done via online courses (the National Autistic Society offer plenty!) Or simply by reading blogs, speaking with autistic people or watching things like Ted Talks. It’s really about broadening your understanding of the specific needs you’ll be working with and the sort of support strategies that can help rather than becoming an all-out specialist in any particular condition.

Some schools may also require you to undertake specific courses in-line with their policies and procedures. For example, if you will be working with children who have limited mobility, you may need to do a day or two training on Manual Handling/Moving and Handling techniques. Or if you work with children who have limited verbal capability, a course such as an introduction to PECs or Makaton may prove useful. It really depends on the individual class you’ll be working with, so find this out in advance (and if training is required, see if the school will put you on a course/pay for you to attend one!)

3 – Familiarise yourself with school policy/procedure

This really goes for all school staff, regardless of whether the setting is mainstream or specialist. It is important to understand what to do in a range of situations, and most schools will cover this during induction training. If your school does not offer such training, you should seek out key policies and procedures so that you know how to react in a range of situations, such as:

During fire drills/evacuations notices

When you encounter low-level classroom disruption/poor behaviour

If a child puts them self or others at risk physically

If a child runs away or “melts down” during a lesson

If there is a medical emergency

Of course, there are a broad range of scenarios which could occur in schools and you can’t possibly cover every single one during training, but by preparing yourself for the most commonly seen and serious ones, you can start your new job safe in the knowledge that you are well prepared for it.

4 – Pitch your content appropriately

This can be one of the trickier obstacles for a teacher or member of school support staff to negotiate when moving into a SEND provision for the first time. It may take a little while to fine-tune your activities so that they not only meet the cognitive needs of the students you work with, but also the personal needs. Your students will always get the most out of the sessions you prepare if you can provide them not just with materials which are suitably challenging, but also those which are suitably interesting to them. It is often worth speaking to other school staff members, carers or family members to find out about ability levels and interests so that you can have confidence that what you are planning is suitable and will be enjoyed by the students you work with.

5 – Have fun!

Some SEND environments can bring with them plenty of challenges. There may be children in your class with life-shortening conditions or profound special needs which limit their ability to participate in many activities. It’s important that you don’t let this aspect of the job get you down, and you build in plenty of opportunities to have fun in the classroom with your students. After all, if you are having fun, this is sure to rub off on those around you!

Are you looking for SEND staff or work?

If you're looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help?

Axcis candidates: How to complete your online registration

Have you recently registered for work with Axcis online and have received an email asking you to complete your details? Or perhaps you’re looking to register with us and want to find out how it works. Find the answers to these queries here.

Registering with Axcis

Registering with Axcis online is a simple process that shouldn’t take more than about 10 minutes. All you need to do is visit our website and fill in the required fields. The more information you can provide, the easier it will be for our team to match your details to suitable job roles.

Completing your referee details

Once you have registered online, you will receive an email asking you to fill in your referee details, along with any other incomplete details from the online process. The screen shots below will help you to do this if you are unsure.

What an incomplete registration looks like

The below image shows what you will see when you log in if your registration is incomplete. The menu on the left of the screen will have some red fields. These are the ones you will need to select and complete.

What a complete registration looks like

Once all the required fields are complete, all items on the left menu will have green ticks next to them – as in the screen shot below.

Importance of including a CV

It really helps us to help you if you ensure that a CV is uploaded as part of your registration process. This will save us asking you a lot of questions, and will help to direct us in terms of what suitable placements we may be able to offer you. If you need help to put a CV together, we have a template you can use on our useful downloads page.

Having problems? Get in touch

If you have followed the steps outlined in this article and are having any problems with your registration, or if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with your local office for support.

Refer a friend to Axcis and earn up to £250
